Preschool Program

Preschool Program (3-5 years)
In the preschool room we regard the younger years as the time in a child life in which the foundations are laid. These skills are essential for ongoing growth and development into adulthood. Our program plays particular attention to the culture and social context of children’s development. We understand that children’s play and learning will be based around life events and social interactions.

The program develops the children’s inquisitiveness and planning skills. It is a play based one just like the preparatory year at school. The reason for this is because play stems from children’s interests and creates motivation, wonder and excitement and this when children will soak up information like a sponge. Vygotsky, a well known child theorist, highlights that play is the leading activity for learning in the preschool years.

The program is predominantly based on the emergent curriculum which stems from children’s interest. It is through a child’s journey of learning that we identify and create a holistic picture of their strengths, interests, involvement and challenges. We also value the process that children work through making fresh discoveries and coming to new understandings. Children make sense of this knowledge by connecting with prior experiences and use this to decide how best to enhance their learning and development.

How our program works
We have a core curriculum that is set up each day. The core curriculum is made up of the following areas;
Blocks, Drawing, Painting, Collage, Play dough, Manipulative/construction, Music & movement, Stories & language, Dramatic Play & Outdoor play

• The environment is set up to feel like a home away from home. There are self selection areas allowing the children to feel a sense of belonging and trust.
• Teachers create a picture of each child by building reciprocal relationships with parents, observing children and talking with children. This allows teachers to find each child’s true interests.
• Once an interest is found teachers question children and find out what they already know.
• Teachers then extend on the child’s interest by; getting the children to plan events/activities, bringing in exciting information or objects, invite in parents or guests.
• The information is then collected and displayed in a learning story on the programming board. Observations or learning stories will be put into children’s individual files and displayed for parents to view and input.
• Portfolios are also used as a tool of reflection for children to revisit their learning.
• We encourage you to enrich our program by bringing in items of interest. You can also help extend on interests or projects by sharing information, stories, skills or artifacts with us.
